SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION TO SUPPORT RESOLUTION OF GENERIC -

SAFETY ISSUE (GSI) 165, " SPRING-ACTUATED SAFETY AND RELIEF VALVE RELIABILITY" -

Dear' Mr. Ray:

The NRC's Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research is currently in the process of resolving GSI 165. This GSI addresses whether failures of spring-actuated relief valves in safety-related support systems have the potential to cause substantial increases in plant core damage frequency (CDF), and what, if any, generic action may be appropriate. To assist the staff in its analyses, we request that you provide the information requested in the enclosure for the listed

. valves. This information is being requested to allow the staff to study the effects on CDF for generic plant types using available probabilistic risk assessment models.

This request for information is completely voluntary, and relates to the configuration and design of certain valves as they currently exist. There are no new requirements or staff positions contained in this request. We appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Please contact me at (301) 415-1352 if you have any questions.

Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY-James W. Clifford, Senior Project Manager Project Directorate IV-2
