Dear Mr. Cain:

Re: License SNM-Ill

~lhe purpose of this letter is to request the increase possession limit of Uranium-233 from 0.505 grams to 0,605 grams.

This material will be used for a uranium-thorium isotope study of volcanic rocks, which will be conducted in both Building 21 and Building 25, Denver Federal Center.

The research requires that a dilute spike solution containing equal quantities (0.01 micrograms per gram) of both Thorium-229 and Uranium-233 be prepared in Building 21, and then transferred to a new laboratory in Building 25 to be used for thorium chemistry in Building 25, The reason for this is that Thorium-230 is used in Building 21, and there is the possibility of contamination if it were done in Building 21.

Samples containing the separated thorium and uranium fractions will then be returned to Building 21 from Building 25 where the mass spectrometric determination for isotopes will be performed.

This research was - reviewed, discussed and approved by the Radiological Advisory Committee at a recent meeting, and it is respectfully requested that you review this amendment at your earliest convenience in order for the project to proceed.

Sincerely,

20555 Re: License No. SNM-111

Dear Mr. Combs:

The purpose of this letter is to request an amendment to authorize additional use of special nuclear material.

The Geological Survey wishes to use room 120, Building 15, as a pre-screening room to determine the radioactivity of environmental water samples before ultimately processing them at the National Water Quality Laboratory at 52nd and Ward Road. These samples, environmental, as well as samples from IIC test sites and/or nuclear waste disposal sites on a nationwide basis, may contain the plutonium isotcpu 236, 238, 239, 240 and 241.

Analyses to be performed on these samples may include, but not necessarily limited to, automated analyses for major and minor elements or constituents, dissolved organic or inorganic carbon species, gas chromatoF9Ph and liquid chromatograph, atomic absorption analyses for major and trace metals. Approximately 10 milliter aliquots will be required from the sample to perform these analyses.

It is expected that possession limits for this analysis should not exceed 5 microcuries.

This proposed use has been reviewed and approved by the Radiological Advisory Committee.

Accordingly, it is respectfully requested that Condition BE be amended to reflect an increase in the possession limits to 31 milligrams. This will provide for the current request as well as anticipated other Survey a crivities involving small uses of plutonium isotopes.

Very truly yours.
