Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 Middletown, Pennsylvania

UNPLANNED SHUTDOWN DUE T0 REACTOR COOLANT PUMP SEAL FAILURE _

The facility is expected to shut down this evening to investigate and j repair an apparently failed 0-ring in the "C" Reactor Coolant Pump, No. t 2 seal. The Reactor Coolant System will be cooled down, depressurized and partially drained to make repairs. The repairs are expected to be completed in one week. ,

b/ production capability caused by the forced outage. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed. A routine weekly press release is planned by the licensee.

NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone call from the Unit 1 Superintendent at 2:30 p.m., June 21, 1978.
