.f PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION May 12, 1978 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-78-110 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

SUBJEC : SPENT RESIN SPILL At 3:15 PM on May 11, approximately two cubic feet of spent radioactive resin slurry was spilled on the pavement adjacent to the auxiliary building. This resulted in approximately two gallons of slightly contaminated water entering a storm drain to the plant cooling water channel. Resin was being . transferred to a liquid waste disposal truck -

' when a pipe internal to the truck failed, releasing the slurry to the g truck sump. A portion of the slurry leaked onto the pavement. The

(', j) slurry concentration was highly radioactive and was composed primarily of Cobalt 58. Radiation levels at the bottom of the truck were 7 rem / hour i

on contact. No personnel contamination or overexposure occurred. The  ;

radioactive water released to the environment did not exceed NRC limits.

An IE inspector has been dispatched to the site to perform an independent evaluation.

Media interest is not expected. A news release is not planned by the licensee nor the NRC. The State of Florida has been informed.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 6:00 PM on May 11. This information is current as of 10:00 AM on May 12.
