.during'the period May 1-5, 1989, of' activities authorized by NRC Operating-

. License NPF-47 for; River Bend Station, and to the discussion of-our findings
.l
with Mr; T. . F. Plunkett and other members of your staff at.the conclusion of

- the inspection.
Areas ' examined during the inspection included your. program for design changes
'
and modifications,. and your. program for making Raychem heat shrink electrical
splices.. Within these areas .the inspection consisted of selective examination
of procedures and-representative records, interviews with personnel, and .
'.ob::ervations by the NRC inspector. The inspection findings are documented in
the' enclosed: inspection report.
Subsequent to this inspection, a telephone call was made on May 17. 1989,
. between Mr. T. F. Stetka of the' NRC Region IV staff, and Mr. T. F. Plunket of
your staff. As a result of this call, Gulf States Utilities committed to
complete al.1 the engineering' evaluations and determine the acceptability of all
in plant' electrical splices for plant operation.
It is our understanding that
these' evaluations, identified .in Condition Report (CR)86-035,'will be completed
prior to'startup. from the present refueling outage.
.
Within'the scope of, the inspection, no violations or deviations were
identified.

discuss; them with you.
