SAFETY EVALUATION FOR ITEMS 2.2 (PART 1), 4.5.2 AND 4.5.3 0F GENERIC LETTER 83-28, " REQUIRED ACTIONS BASED ON GENERIC IMPLICATIONS OF SALEM ATWS EVENTS," FOR THE WOLF CREEK GENERATING STATION (TAC NOS. 57373 AND 57385)

The staff is cor.tinuing its review of the Wolf Creek submittals tc Generic Letter 83-28, " Required Actions Based on Generic Implications of Salem ATWS Events." The purpose of this letter is to provide you with completed safety evaluations and their corresponding centractor reports for Items 2.2 (Part 1),

4.5.2 and 4.5.3 of the generic letter.

Item 2.2 (Part 1), also referred to as Item 2.2.1, required you to describe in detail your program for classifyirs all safety-related components, other than l

reactor trip system components, as safety-related on plant documents and in I

information handling systems that are used to control plant activities that may affect these components. Wolf Creek responded to this requirement through letters dated l' arch 10 and November 15, 1983 and February 29, 1984 provides the staff's safety evaluation that finds your submittal acceptable while provides the contractor's technical evaluation of this subject.

Item 2.2, (Part 2) of the generic letter is still under review by the staff.

Item 4.5.2 of the generic letter (Reactor Trip System Reliability - System Functional Testing - On-Line Testing) required licensees and applicants with plants not currently designed to permit on-line testing to justify not making modifications to permit such testing. Wolf Creek responded to this requirement through a letter dated November 15, 1983. Enclosure 3 provides the staff's

. safety evaluation that finds your submittal acceptable while Enclosure 4 provides the contractor's technical evaluation of this subject.

Item 4.5.3 of the generic letter required on-line functional testing of the reactor trip system, including independent testing of the diverse trip features.

The staff hes completed its review of the Westinghouse Owners Group submittal.
