- This Special Report is being submitted in accordance with Lasalle Unit 1 and 2 operating License NPF-11 and NPF-18,~ Appendix B (Environmental Protective
' Plan), paragraph 4.1 regarding a fish kill casualty related to plant operation.
On June 26, 1989 at 1300 hours0.015 days
0.361 hours
0.00215 weeks
4.9465e-4 months
with Unit 1 in Operational Condition 1 (Run) at 95 percent power and Unit 2 in operational Condition 1 at 86 percent power, a small number of dead fish were observed floating and beached along.the south
' side of the center steering dike of the LaSalle County Cooling Pond (ultimate heat sink).. A representative of the' Illinois Department of Conservation was contacted'and identifications and counts of the dead fish were rede from June 27 through June 29.
A' total of 196 fish were counted and disposed of. the dead fish had no affect on plant operation or equipment.
The die-off in the cooling pond was caused by high water temperatures pond wide and/or low dissolved oxygen concentrations in some fish refuge areas.
These conditions resultet from unusually warm weather. combined with sustained two unit operation.. The majority of fish that died are of-the cool water i-species (approximately 90%) which were stocked in the cooling pond on an experimental basis. Since'the conditions that caused the die-off cannot be avoided with unit operation during unusually warm weather future plans are to limit or suspend stocking of cool water fish species.
