Dear Sir:
Subject:
Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station Docket No. 50-219 Response to NRC Generic Letter 89-08
" Erosion / Corrosion-Induced Pipe Wall Thinning" GPUN has implemented an erosion / corrosion monitoring program at Oyster Creek which meets the intent of the NUMARC program (Attachment A to NUREG-1344).
This program will serve in the interim and will subsequently be modified to I
provide a long term corporate level approach.

The utility industry is still evaluating the erosion / corrosion issue.
I Ongoing EPRI sponsored activities are being evaluated by our corporate j
engineering staff for incorporation into our program.
For example, we are l
currently comparing the EPRI CHEC and CHECMATE programs with our in-house generated computer program to determine which will best serve.to identify a component's susceptibility to erosion / corrosion and thereby identify additional components for inspection. EPRI's acceptance criteria for structural evaluation of thinned piping is also under evaluation.
We consider completion of the EPRI sponsored activities and our evaluation of them to be prerequisites to establishing our formal long term program.
Our current erosion / corrosion monitoring program will be used until our long term 1
