Letter Mr. E. J. Leeds (NRC) to Mr. C.11. Cruse (BGE), dated April 11, 1998, Calvert Cliffs 10 CFR Part 72 Event Notification 33821 On March 3,1998, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company made a four-hour non-emergency notification to report a condition that may potentially render the NUllOMS-24P Dry Shielded Canister / fuel package defective as it is described in the Calvert Cliffs Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI)
Updated Safety Analysis Report (USAR). The condition we reported concerns a Lawrence Livermore Laboratory Report No. UCID 21246 that was referenced in both the Calvert Cliffs ISFSI USAR and the NUTECil (now Transnuclear, Inc.) ISFSI Topical Report. The report was used to conclude that fuel assemblies maintain structural integrity during a transfer cask drop accident. Baltimore Gas and Electric Company determined the report did not substantiate that conclusion.
By Reference (a) yea requested we provide you with a copy of a postulated cask drop evaluatien that our nuclear fuel vendor performed to address the above issue.
Despite expediting attention, we have just recently received the evaluation from our vendor. We are currently performing an acceptance review of this evaluation. We are unable to complete the acceptance review to meet your requested date of May 11. We plan to provide you with the evaluation by May 31,1998. We regret any inconv1 tience this delay may cause.
Should you have further questions regarding this matter, we will be pleased to discuss them with you.
Very truly yours, 9805180277 980500 PDR ADOCK 05000317 y
