( Attachment Duke Power Company McGuire Nuclear Station Diesel Generator 2B Special Report i On July 30, 1989 at 1658, Diesel Generator (DG) 2B was being tested per PI/2/A/4350/15B, 18 month performance test, when it experienced an Invalid Test Failure (Start Attempt No. 719). The failure was due to low crankcase vacuum (which could be by passed in an emergency).

Smoke sticks were used to determine the locations of the vacuum leaks. The only area where a leak could be detected was on the crank shaft oil seal. The oil seal was replaced. The vacuum was then checked and verified to be above the trip limit.

The old oil seal was in fair condition but did show signs of wear. Upon further investigation, the problem now appears to be wear of the oil seal retainer ring rather than the oil seals. New retainer rings have been ordered per requisition no. 892864. The retainer rings will be installed during the next scheduled DG maintenance shut down.

On July 30, 1989 at 1800, the DG was started and successfully tested (Start Attempt No. 720).
