Docket No. 50-285 2.
Letter from NRC (L. J. Callan) to OPPD (K. J. Morris) dated May 19, 1989 Gentlemen:
SUBJECT:
Response to Unresolved Item - Inspection Report 50-285 / 8913-03 In response to the subject unresolved item noted in reference 2, Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) has evaluated the effect of missing screens from component cooling water (CCW) pump motors on the environmental qualification of the motors.
In addition, OPPD contacted the motor manufacturer, Allis-Chalmers, regarding the same issue. OPPD's position on the screens is summarized below.
The subject screens are not identified in OPPD's Environmental tquipment Qualification (EEQ) program. The function of these screens, as stated by the motor manufacturer, is to prevent large debris and rodents from entering and damaging motor internals.
This is not a necessary function in room 69, which houses the pump motors, since this room is clear of large debris and rodents.
The screens have no other safety function. However, the screens have been reinstalled on the pump motors for good housekeeping practices.
Based on the discussion above, it is OPPD's position that these motor screens are not required to be installed to maintain the EEQ status for the motors.
OPPD believes this transmittal should resolve this subject item.
