i NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No.

50-266

Unit Name Point Beach Unit 1 Date July 7, 1989

' Completed By C. if. Krause Telephone 414/221-2001 Unit 1 operated at approximately 500 MWe net throughout the report period with no.significant load reductions.

On June 1, steam generator sample isolation valve 1-2083 failed to close on a'high radiation test signal.

Maintenance discovered the solenoid for the valve operator had degraded.

The solenoid was replaced and the valve tested satisfactorily.

Licensee Event Report 89-003, describing this event was sent to the NRC.

On June 25,-control operators noted a spurious status light on the recently installed "ATWS Mitigating System Actuation Circuitry" (AMSAC).

This circuitry was installed to meet the requirements of 10 CFR 50.62 (turbine trip and auxiliary feed pump starts; independent'of existing reactor protection and safeguards circuitry).

A power reduction was initiated per Technical Specification requirements.

Instrumentation & Control technicians discovered an alarm module bistable had failed output contacts.

The bistable was replaced and Unit 1 achieved full power operations within eight hours of the initial' load reduction.

Licensee Event Report 89-007 will be prepared to document the details of this event.

Other safety related maintenance included the replacement of.

1-P-2B charging pump seals and the recalibration of channel 401 overtemperature and overpower delta' temperature' trip setpoints.

NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No.

50-301 Unit Name Point Beach Unit 2 Date July 7, 1989 Completed By C. W. Krause Telephone 414/221-2001 Unit 2 operated at approximately 500 MWe net throughout the period with no significant load reductions.

On June 19, operators noted control rod B-6 rod position indication fluctuating.

This instrumentation senses rod position and can initiate a turbine runback.

After the signal was verified to be erroneous, Instrumentation & Control technicians bypassed the rod bottom bistable that receives the signal from the faulty indicator.

Final corrective maintenance will be completed during the September 1989 refueling outage.

Other maintenance considered important to safety included, fluid addition to auxiliary feed line hydraulic support HS-21, repairs to a body-bonnet leak on a steam generator pressure transmitter isolation valve and repairs to an undervoltage relay on safeguards bus 2-B03.
