COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET KOS 50-445 AND 50-446 IE BULLETIN 79-15:

DEEP DRAFT PUMP DEFICIENCIES REF: TUGCo Letter TXX-3430 from Mr. R. J. Gary to Mr. H. R. Denton of NRC, dated October 26, 1981 Gentlemen:

The referenced letter provided the CPSES response to the NRC staff's request for additional information concerning IE Bulletin 79-15 and the programs implemented to ensure long-term reliability of the Service Water pumps.

Item

2) in that response reads as follows:

" Radial vibration readings will be taken on the top three pump. bearings at regular intervals to detect changes in operating parameters. Complete signature trace analysis will be conducted as necessary in order to trend overall equipment performance."

Based on a recent review of this response and the inaccessibility of the pump bearings TU Electric provides the following' discussion and revised response to Item 2):

" Radial vibration readings will be taken on the upper and lower motor bearings and axial vibration readings will be taken on the upper motor bearing.

Complete signature trace analysis will be conducted as necessary in order to trend overall equipment performance."

Discussion:

The Unit I and Unit 2 pumps were initially operated in 1982 and 1986 respectively. Both sets of pumps have been run extensively since their initial operation.

A review of the operating and maintenance history of the pumps shows that there have been no significant uesign, assembly, or installation problems with the pumps since their initial operation.

TU Electric considers that measuring and trending vibration transmitted through the rigid flange type motor / pump coupling provides an acceptable

'j method of monitoring pump and shaft bearing conditions. Additionally, the vibration of operating Service Water pumps is monitored at nominal six-week intervals, which exceeds the quarterly monitoring requirement of our Inservice Testing program. The increased monitoring frequency provides added assurance that any bearing degradation woul,d be detected prior to pump failure.
