' Attention: Mr. Ken Eagleson iSuject: McGuire Nuclear Station 1988 Lake Norman Summary Report

' NPDES Permit (NC0024392) 4 File: MC-702.13

Dear Sir:

Enclosed is the Lake Norman Summary Report for 1988, as required by the.

McGuire Nuclear Station (MNS) NPDES permit-(NC0024392). As you! review this report, please note the . incorporation of hydroacoustic studies into the Lake Norman environmental monitoring program in 1988. The distribution of

' fish associated with water temperature changes in the mixing zone of MNS f rom ; June through September is being monitored with hydroacoustic gear.

Use of hydroacoustic gear and other fisheries studies have been discussed

.with biologists of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.. The

. density (number per ha) and total length of fish are estimated from the

, hydroacoustic . samples, ' and results for 1988 are included' in the 1988 -

report. Please note that speciation of these fish would require sampling with other types of gear (i.e. gill nets, trawling) that would result in mortality of most fish collected.

Part III.Y.1 of a proposed revision of the NPDES permit for MNS requires the determination of abundance and distribution of striped bass and other species. Previous comments forwarded to Mr. Dale Overcash (Attention: Ms.

Lula-Harris)'on 13 July 1989 requested that the phrase " striped bass and other species"' be changed to " fish in the mixing zone of McGuire Nuclear Station". Continued consideration of thia change is requested to minimize the loss to the put-grow-and-take striped bass fishery and other fish species that would be collected incidentally. Monitoring and preparation of reports to address the fish distribution concern, as well as, other concerns of Part III.Y. (maximum discharge temperatures at 100% load and possible effects on swimmers / fallen skiers in the thermal plume during July, August, and September) are presently being pursued. Please share your comments and information with Mr. Overcash and Ms. Harris.
