Augu:t 17, 1989 CHAIRMAN The Honorable John C. Danforth United States Senate Wasnington, D. C.

20510

Dear Senator Danforth:

I am responding to your letter of July 19, 1989, in which you supported the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' request for a public meeting on the planned expansion of operations at the Combustion Engineering plant in Hematite, Missouri.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has received several similar requests and agrees that a public meeting in the vicinity of the plant will provide a useful opportunity for interested citizens to express their views on the proposed license amendment.

Accordingly, the NRC staff, after con-sulting with interested individuals and groups in Jefferson County, has arranged for a meeting to be held on August 24, 1989, at 7:30 p.m.,

at' Jefferson Junior College, in Hillsboro, Missouri.

Representatives of the NRC staff will attend the meeting, and we understand that Combustion Engineering also i

plans to participate.

In addition to the public meeting, you may be interested in knowing that the Commission has received two requests for an informal adjudicatory hearing on the proposed amendment under the Commission's rules for material licensing proceedings (10 C.F.R. Part 2, Subpart L).

Administrative Judge Charles Bechhoefer has been appointed presiding officer for the proceeding.

He will review the petitions and will conduct this hearing if he determines that the petitions meet the require-ments of Subpart L.

I want to assure you that the NRC will carefully consider the views expressed by citizens living near the plant before acting on the proposed license amendment.

Sincerely, Kenneth M. Carr 8908310206 890817 PDR COMM5 NRCC CORRESPONDENCE PDC
