6 LF CREEK W4) NUCLEAR OPERATING Bart D. Withers President and Chief Executive omcor June 19, 1989 WM 89-0177 U. S.. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Mail Station P1-137 Washington, D. C. 20555
Subject:
Docket No. 50-482:. Response to NRC Bulletin 89-01,
" Failure of Westinghouse Steam Generator' Tube Mechanical Plugs" Gentlemen:
The purpose of this letter is to provide Wolf Creek Nuclear = Operating Corporation's (WCNOC) response to NRC Bulletin 89-01.
Bulletin 89-01 requested Pressurizer Water Reactor Licensees to determine whether certain mechanical plugs supplied by Westinghouse are installed in their steam generators and if so, Implement an action plan to ensure that these plugs will continue to provide adequate assurance of reactor coolant system l
pressure boundary integrity under normal operating, transient, and postulated accident conditions.
As required by Action 1 of the bulletin, Westinghouse supplied information and Wolf Creek Generating Station (WCGS) records were. reviewed to determine if any mechanical plugs from heats 3279,
- 3513, 3962 or 4523 were installed in WCGS steam generators.
This review determined that there are no mechanical plugs installed at WCGS from the four heats identified in the bulletin.
Since no plugs from these heats are installed at WCGS, Action. 2.e is the only other item from the bulletin which is applicable to WCGS.
Action 2.e requires that when Westinghouse mechanical plugs are removed from steam generators, regardless.of heat number, they should be examined for primary water stress corrosion cracking on, a sample basis for' each heat.
In
- addition, records of these examinations should be maintained and results should be provided to Westinghouse.
In accordance with the requirements of Action 2.e of the bulletin, these - actions will be taken fr e any plugs removed from the WCGS steam generators in the future.
