This refers' to your < letter dated February 15, 1989, regarding Moisture
' Separator Reheater (MSR) debris sampling, and Confirmatory Action Letter, CAL-RIII-88-009, dated April ~ 19, 1988.
Your. letter requested NRC concurrence' to halt the' microscopic inspection of the reactor coolant filterable solids c
for stainless steel on a. weekly basis as required by Item 5.b of the CAL ~.
Your request was based on reactor coolant sample results since mid-July 1988 indicating no evidence of stainless steal strands.
Based on an NRC inspection of chemistry records on April 10-14, 1989, we concur with your request.
We also note that an' inspection of the East and West MSRs was performed in September 1988, and it was determined that the previous modifications to the primary and secondary. steam distribution plates effectively prev'ented the recurrence of MSR damage. The remaining open MSR item from the CAL'is the ongoing program to conduct inspections of the reactor feed pump suction strainers and the flash tank strainers during all cold shutdowns of sufficient duration.
We will review your implementation of this program during a future inspection.
