I am responding to your letter of October 6, 1987 requesting that the

.Commission ensure that the NRC have available the necessary staff resources to. support both the adjudicatory proceeding involving disposal of accident-review and. oversight of the Three Mile generated water and the ongoing (TMI-2) cleanup program.
Island Nuclear Station, Unit'2-Since the March 28, 1979 accident at TMI-2, the. Commission has recognized the importance of a safe and expeditious cleanup of the TMI-2 facility.
-Accordingly, NRC resources have been. applied to ensure that our regulatory oversight activities'are both comprehensive and timely..The reductions in NRC staff resources dedicated to the TMI-2 cleanup that have already occurred were made in recognition of the' diminished health and safety risk
-associated with cleanup progress and the resolution of the most difficult
. technical issues' associated with the program.
Let me assure you that the Commission intends to continue to provide adequate NRC staff support for the. ongoing clean up activities and the pending ad-judicatory proceedings.
This commitment will be appropriately considered before any changes are made in NRC staff assigned to the TMI-2-cleanup.
