Revision 1, April,.1989
Subject:
Response to NRC Bulletin 89-01: Failure of Westinghouse Steam Generator' Tube Mechanical Plugs Gentlemen:
This letter provides information required by NRC Bulletin 89-01 regarding steam generator tube mechanical plugs supplied to Seabrook Station by Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
There are currently a total of twelve mechanical plugs installed in the tubes.of the four steam generators at Seabrook Station Unit 1.
These twelve plugs were supplied by Westinghouse from heat number 2387 which is not one of the heat numbers of concern identified by the Bulletin.
The material from heat number 2387 is reported by Reference (c) to exhibit continuous grain boundary carbide distribution. Consequently, the corrective actions requested by the Bulletin for installed steam generator tube mechanical plugs from heat numbers 3279, 3513, 3962 and 4523 are not j
applicable to Seabrc,vk.
It has been determined that no steam generator tube mechanical plugs are in Seabrook Station inventory. Reference (c) indicates that mechanical
. plugs supplied by Westinghouse for future installation in steam generators will consist of material having a preferred microstructure.
