SUBJECT: NRC INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-327/89-12 AND 50-328/89-12

This refers to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission- (NRC) routine x monthly

inspection conducted by K. 'Jenison from April 6,1989 thru May 5,1989. At'the

conclusion of the inspection, the findings were discussed with those members of

your staff identified in the enclosed inspection report.

Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. These areas

included operational safety verification, refueling activities, maintenance and

surveillance activities.

Within these areas, the inspection consisted of

selective examinations . of procedures and representative - records,_ interviews

with personnel, and observation of activities in progress.

The enclosed inspection report identifies activities that appeared to violate

NRC requirements but are not cited; therefore, no response is required.

Your attention is invited to the three Unresolved Items identified' in the

inspection report. These URIs pertain to the method of measuring; core thermal

power, the justification for stopping Boron Injection Tank recirculation while

in Mode 3, and the adequacy of the post maintenance testing performed' on the

auxiliary feedwater pump. following packing replacement.

These items will be

addressed during future inspections.

In accordance with Section 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," Part 2,
