Director, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health 1600 Clifton Road, Bldg. 1. Rm. 3007 Atlanta, GA 30333

Dear Dr. Millar:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Conynission licenses the Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS)  ;

plant in Erwin, Tennessee. This facility processes enriched uranium hexa- j fluoride into various uranium oxides to be used as reactor fuel. j i

Recently, members of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers' Union (0 CAW) have I complained of various ailments, and the OCAW's physician believes a number of l the workers may have suffered uranium-induced kidney damage. These workers )

have also been examined by the NFS's physician who, we understand, finds no j evidence of kidney damage.

During a recent telephone call, Mr. Robert Alexander, Chief of NRC's f Radiation Risk Assessment and Management Branch, was told by Dr. James M. 1 Smith, Chief of NIOSH's Physical Agents Effects Branch, to contact you in I order to request assistance in resolving this matter. Specifically, we request that you conduct medical evaluations on these workers. If you will contact Dr. J. Nelson Grace, Regional Administrator, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region II, 101 Marietta Street, NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30333, he will make arrangements for NIOSH personnel to do this.

We would appreciate any consideration you could give this matter and would also appreciate being notified of any action you do take.

Sincerely, b}

Robert B. Minogue, Dir tor Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research J. N. Grace
