SUBJECT:

CATAWBA NUCLEAR STATION - RESPONSE TO NRC GENERIC LETTER 97-05, " STEAM GENERATOR TUBE INSPECTION TECHNIQUES" (TAC NOS.

MA0454 AND MA0455)

Dear Mr. Peterson:

The staff has completed its review of your response to Generic Letter 97-05, the focus of which was to verify that licensees' steam generator tube inspection practices were consistent with existing regulatory requirements and plant licensing bases. Duke Energy Corporation (Duke) submitted a response on February 24,1998, that included a description and technical bases for allinspection techniques used to size the depth of steam generator tube degradation at Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2. The staff's review of this response did not identify any concerns with the steam generator tube inspection techniques employed at Catawba that would indicate that Duke is not in compliance with the current licensing basis for the Catawba facility.

This completes our effort on Duke's response for Catawba.
