Dear Mr. Chairman:
On November 5, two members of the NRC staff accompanied a

member of the Subcommittee staff on a visit to the Calvert Cliffs i
nuclear power station operated by Baltimore Gas and Electric j
Company.
The purpose of the visit was to obtain an explanation f rom the operator how over 1500 non-certified f asteners came to i
p be installed in safety-related areas of the plant, and whether i
G this posed any saf ety problems.
l During this visit, the party inspected the warehouse and the receiving and inspection systems.
Several fasteners were selected by the Subcommittee staff and placed in the possession of the NRC Project Manager for Calvert Cliffs.
Samples of the same bolts were also taken by the operator.
I would very much l
appreciate the NRC testing these bolts f or conf ormity with the industry standards for which they are marked.
The tests should l
include dimensional, physical, and chemical conformity.
