Dear Mr. Standerfer:
Subject:
Final Approval of the Fire Protection Program Evaluation for TMI-2 By letter dated February II, 1987 we informed you that the TMI-2 Fire Protection Program Evaluation (FPPE) communicated to us in your letter dated C 3 November 2, 1984 was acceptable with modifications.
Five changes to the L.
program were identified.
In a letter dated March 11, 1987 GPUN addressed each 3
of the five items. The first item was a recommendation by the staff to preposition lengths of fire hose in the reactor building.
In.your letter of Mdrch 11, 1987 you stated that this had been accomplished.
Items 2 through 5 of the staff's February 11, 1987 letter recommended the insthilation of additional fire detectors in four locations, two in the auxiliary and t= in the fuel handling buildings.
In your March 11, 1987 letter you provided a detailed fire hazards analysis for each specific location. You concluded that a
on the basis of the building structure, available manual and automatic fire protection features, colabustible control procedures, future modifications and periodic tears by operating personnel, additional fire detectors were not necessary.
t Based on a review of your submittal we conclude that the fire protection features in items 2 through 5 in our February 11, 1987 letter at the locations specified satisflas Appenoir A to BTP APCSB 9.5-1 and provides an acceptable level of fire protection. Additionally, due to the current shutdown moce, the pctential consequences of a fire at TNI-2 are significantly less than those which could be postulated at an operating facility. Accordingly the FPPE dated November 2, 1984 is approved.
1 Sircerely, y
