. VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNITS 1 ANTO EQUIPMENT QUALIFICATION INSPECTION

.Your letter. dated July 24, 1987 provided confirmation of the dates of August 31 - September 4,

1987, for the NRC equipment qualification (EQ) inspection for North Anna Units 1 and 2.

These dates had been established in a telephone conversation between members of our staffs on July 21, 1987. At that time,' we were in the initial phases of the recovery from the Unit 1 steam generator tube rupture and believed that Unit I could be returned to service before commencement' of the inspection. We now project that the recovery will extend until late September, 1987.

Since Unit 2 is scheduled ~to begin a refueling outage in mid-August, 1987, both units will be in outages during the period scheduled for the inspection. The two simultaneous outages will fully utilize the resources available at the station as well as those of our corporate staff.'

It is requested, therefore, that the NRC EQ inspection be deferred until some time after the Unit I recovery has been completed. For planning purposes, we are currently projecting that Unit I will return to service on September 25, 1987, and Unit 2 in early to mid October, 1987. The next refueling outages are tentatively scheduled for late 1988 for Unit 2 and for early 1989 for Unit 1.

If you require additional information, please contact me.

Very truly yours,
