Announcement of Regional Inspection Related to Mark I Containment Modifications - Request for Information This office has scheduled an inspection for the week of October 5, 1987 at the Vermont Yankee plant site and the Yankee Atomic Engineering Of fice. The inspection will encompass your implemeritation of Unresolved Safety Issue A-7, Mark I Containment Long-Term Program. The inspection will be coordinated by a regional inspector assisted by two NRC contractor engineer specialists. The purpose of the inspection is to verify that plant specific Mark I modifications at Vermont Yankee meet the requirements identified in NUREG-0661, Containment

Long Term Program.

Mr. A. A. Varela of this office discussed this inspection with D. A. Reid of your staff in a telephone conversation on August 6, 1987.

Based on our request, Mr. Reid agreed to provide this office and to EG&G the following documents:

Vermont Yankee's Plant Unique Analysis Report (PUAR)

List of correspondence between VPNPC and the NRC on each phase of the modifications and your responses to NRC requests for additional information Sections of the Technical Specifications pertaining to the suppression pool monitoring systems and (if applicable) to the differential control systems This information will assist in our preparation of a definitive plan for sampling the engineering designs and implementation of selected modifications in your long term program.

The inspection team will fir,t review engineering analyses, calculations for design of the modification drawings and modification work packages.

These will be reviewed and discussed with responsible engineers at the Yankee Atomic Electric Company office in Framingham. Mr. Reid informed Mr. Varcla that YAEC's project manager Mr. S. Miller is the contact person for the VY torus modifications 870G250130 870819 PDR ADOCK 0500 1

engineering work. The second part of the inspection will include a plant visit and walkdown inspection of selected samples of modifications identified during the engineering review.

Photographs of typical in-torus modifications should be available for the inspection.
