It has been reported in the "New London Day" that the U.S. Navy will allow about 400 feet of flawea piping to remain in the steam systems of eight (8) nuclear submarines built at General Dynamics Electric Boat Division, but has issued tighter inspection rules to ensure such a situation does not occur again.

The following information is requested regarding F0IA Request No. N-1.

A. Material manufacturer's name.

B. Type of flawed material to reamin.

C. Heat number of flawed material to remain.

D. Manufacturer's name, type of material and heat number of materials removed.

E. Name of each of the eight (8) submarines involved.

F. Date each submarine was commissioned.

l One of the two (2) nuclear reactors a t the North Anna Plant operated

by Virginia Power was shut down due to a ruptured stainless steel tube carrying superheated water to a nuclear power plant steam generator which released radioactivity to the atmosphere.

The following information is requested regarding F0IA Request No. N-2. l l

A. Manufacturer's name of tubing material that ruptured.

B. Heat number of stainless steel tubing material that ruptured.  !

i C. Date ruptured material was purchased.

D. Quantity of identical thousands of tuber purchased at same date l ruptured tubing was purchased.

It is specifically noted that no secret or U.S. Classified information is requested. However, in the event such information is withheld, it is requested that such information be formally denied and identified.

Your cooperation concerning these requests is sincerely appreciated. ,
