HAR 2 6 H25 ACTIVATED CARBON FILTERS LABORATORY ANALYSIS 1.

INTRODUCTION 1

L 1.1 Technical Specification Surveillance Requirements 1.1.1 (1) After every 720 hours0.00833 days
0.2 hours
0.00119 weeks
2.7396e-4 months
of charcoal adsorber operation, or (2) at least every 18 months, or (3) after any structural maintenance of the charcoal adsorber housings, or (4) following painting, fire or chemical release in any ventilation zone communicating with the system, or (5) after complete or partial replacement of the filter bank, surveillance'shall be performed by:

Laboratory Analysis At least two carbon samples, one from each of the specified charcoal adsorbers, will be analyzed to verify the designated removal efficiency, e, of an activated iodine at the specified temperature, T, and relative humidity, RH.

The carbon samples will be prepared by emptying one bed from an adsorber tray, mixing the adsorbent thoroughly and obtaining samples at least two inches in diameter and with a length equal to the thickness of the bed.

Instrumentation, equipment and procedures for carbon samples tested at the laboratory will generally conform to the recommendations in ANSI N510-197 5.

See Table 1 for acceptance criteria.

REFERENCES ANSI N510 - 1975, 1980 Testing of Air Cleaning Systems The American Society of Mechanical Engineers Technical Specification 4.17.1.C Industrial Ventilation 3.

TESTINj 3.1 Two representative samples shall be taken from one of the carbon filter banks specified in Table 1.

The test engineer will determine the location for the samples.

These samples should be from a carbon cell which has not been previously used for sampling if possible. The samples shall be subjected to a chemical analysis to determine the iodine removal efficiency.

See Table 1 for test gas and acceptance criteria.

3.1.1~ Test' Methods 1

Test methods and procedures shall generally conform to the' guidelines provided by A!451 N510.

See Table'1 for acceptance criteria.

The sample amount of carbon shall be replaced with new carbon and the cell should be marked with the following information:

(Date sampled) and (Name of the Test Engineer). The cell must be returned to its original location in the filter bank. The filter _ bank shall then be subjected to the " Activated Carbon Filters-In Place Leak Test" TSS 15.6.14A.

4.

DATA RE0VIREMENTS 4,1 Complete test report shall be furnished as outlined in ANSI N510.

Documentation must be provided to certify instrument calibration.
