SUMMARY
OF AUGUST 5-6,1998, MEETING WITH THE BABCOCK &.
WILCOX OWNERS GROUP TO DISCUSS BAW-2241, " FLUENCE &
l UNCERTAINTY METHODOLOGIES" On August 5-6,1998, representatives of the Babcock and Wilcox Owners Group (B&WOG) met with members of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to present information on topical BAW-2241, " Fluence & Uncertainty Methodologies." The meeting was in response to a l
Request for Additional Information (RAl) sent by the NRC on April 8,1998.
The B&WOG reviewed their responses to an RAI previo'usly sent in January 1998 and also j '
explained their determination that a meeting was appropriate for this RAl. The staff agreed that the meeting was appropriate but asked the Owners Group to follow up with written responses for L
the RAl. The Owners Group then reviewed with the staff the approach used in BAW-2241 to determine vessel fluence. The approach used by the Owners Group determines vessel fluence L
analytically rather than estimating the fluence from sample examinations and extrapolating the results. The Owners Group then discussed each of the questions from the April RAI, including how the analytical results would be used, how the effect of increased plutonium in high burnup
/
- fuels is included in the source calculations, the effect of the core shroud former plates, the g
b relative importance of uncertainties in specific equations, and whether the methodology is to be applied to cores with partial length fuel assemblies. The B&WOG also discussed the buildup of fission produsts and their effect on dosimetry and on calculations.
k7)3
- At the conclusion of the meeting, B&WOG agreed to provide summary responses to the
. questions,in the RAI as discussed during the meeting. A list of those attending the meeting is attached.
