SUBJECT:
NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-293/98-09
Dear Mr. Olivier:
The NRC conducted an inspection between July 13, and July 24,1998, at the Pilgrim
Nuclear Power Station. The inspection was focused upon engineering evaluations in
support of operability determinations, the corrective action (problem reporting) process,
and the effectiveness of actions associated with findings from previous NRC inspections.

The results of the inspection were discussed with Messrs. C. Goddard, T. Sullivan and
I
others of your staff at an exit meeting held on July 24,1998. Subsequent to that date,
resolution of the emergency diesel generator ambient temperature design issue was
discussed via telephone call with your staff on August 13,1998.
Operability questions were found to be appropriately resolved using engineering
evaluations, and management oversight of the process was evident. Corrective actions
associated with previous inspection findings were as stated in responses and reports
submitted to the NRC, and were appropriate.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter
and its enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
