Docket Nos. 50-348 and 50-3S4 During the review of Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc.'s (SNC's) response to Generic Letter (GL) 97-05, " Steam Generator Tube inspection Techniques," the staff noted one area that required additional clarification in order k assess the adequacy of inspection techniques employed at the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2 (Farley). In this regard, please provide the following information to the NRC.

The NRC staff noted a potential inconsistency with the stated practice employed at Farley for dispositioning manufacturing burnish mark (MBM) indications during steam generator tube inspections. Specifically, it was stated that a rotating coil examination is used to distinguish between MBMs and other modes of tube damage. Discuss the qualification that enables the differentiation between MBMs and other volumetric forms of tube degradation (e.g.,

intergranular attack), or provide evidence from pulled tubes or industry experience that supports your practice of characterizing MBMs through eddy current insnection techniques. In the response to GL 97-05, SNC indicated that prior inspection data is reviewed to disposition potential MBM indications. State in your response whether it is the practice at Farley to review preservice or the most recent inspection data to determine if indications were evident in the past.
