ROOT CAUSE EVALUATION (PRAIRIE ISLAND NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2)

Dear Mr. Anderson:

By Northern States Power Company's (NSP's) letter dated April 6,1998, NSP submitted a '

Westinghouse report titled, "MetallurgicalInvestigation and Root Cause Assessment of Part L ength CRDM [ control rod drive mechanism) Housing Motor Tube Cracking at Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant Unit 2 - Preliminary Summary Report." This report was marked as Westinghouse Proprietary Class 2 and was withheld from public disclosure pending receipt of an affidavit for withholding pursuant to 10 CFR 2.790.

l By letter dated July 15,1998, NSP notified NRC that Westinghouse had determined that the l report could now be classified as Non-Proprietary Class 3. A copy of the report marked as '

nonproprietary was enclosed with your letter and has been placed in the NRC Public Document Room.

We appreciate your notifying NRC of the change of status of this report so that it could be released to the public.
