EQUIPMENT QUALIFICATION INSPECTION - BYRON NUCLEAR PLANT This letter confirms the dates of January 11 through 15, 1988, for the NRC Environmental Qualification (EQ) Inspection of electrical and instrumentation equipment, at the Byron Station, Units 1 and 2.
These dates were established during a December 11, 1987, telephone conversation between Mr. S. Hunsader of your staff and Mr. A. S. Gautam of my staff. The inspection will be performeo by a six member inspection team with Mr. A. S. Gautam of the Region III office as lead inspector.
The following areas will be inspected:
Implementation of corrective action commitments addressed in the final Byron EQ Safety Evaluation Report.
Compliance to EQ regulations of 10 CFR 50.49, including Program Procedures, Master Equipment List, Maintenance, Procurement, Upgrading of Replacement Equipment, Quality Assurance and Employee Training.
Adequacy of equipment qualification files, including responses to relevant NRC Information Notices and Bulletins.
Installation and maintenance of selected plant EQ equipment.
A management entrance meeting is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on January 11, 1988, at the plant site. A plant walkdown inspection of selected EQ equipment is scheduled for January 13, 1988, and an NRC exit meeting is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on January 15, 1988. To facilitate NRC preparation for this inspection your staff has been requested to submit the following EQ documents no later than January 4, 1988.

Certification of Compliance to 10 CFR 50.49).

Licensee's current System Component Evaluation Worksheets (SCEW Sheets).

Licensee's procedures applicable to EQ (EQ Program, procurement of qualified equipment, maintenance of. qualified equipment, and modifications to plant that could affect qualified equipment).
4.
Final NRC EQ SER = including Regulatory Guide 1.97 SER issued to the plant, and any appropriate licensee responses to the SER'.s.
The licensee is requested to make a presentation at the entrance meeting to address:

Overview of EQ documentation file organization such as how files address meeting EQ criteria (10 CFR 50.49, DOR, NURGE 0588), instrument accuracy, and submergence.
