NRC Region III recently received allegations pertaining to contractor personnel at the Braidwood Nuclear Generating Station. The enclosure to this letter describes the allegations received and the identity of the personnel allegedly involved in this " Fitness for Duty" issue. Mr. P. Laird, of your staff, was advised of the information as it became available to NRC Region III.

We request that you initiate and/or continue an investigation in order to fully analyze these allegations. As our staffs have discussed by telephone, your primary focus should be to analyze the facts and determine if there is any impact on safety related equipment. Secondly, we believe an evaluation of your contractor's Fitness for Duty program and implementation practices are appropriate.

The enclosure to this letter should be strictly controlled and distribution limited to personnel with a "need-to-know." The enclosure to this letter is considered as Exempt from Public Disclosure in accordance with Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 2.790(a). A copy of this letter, excluding the enclosure, will be placed in the Public Document Room as required by 10 CFR 2.790. j We request you advise us immediately if your reviews of the allegations identify any impact on nuclear safety and to inform us of all actions you take.

We also request that a written report of the results of your review and the j disposition of this matter be provided to us within 30 days of receipt of this '

letter.

The response directed by this letter is not subject to the clearance procedure of the Office of Management and Budget as required by the Paperwork Reduction act of 1980, PL-96-511.
