NARRATIVE
SUMMARY
OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No.
50-266 Unit Name Point Beach Unit 1 Date December 7, 1987 Completed By C. W. Krause Telephone 414/221-2001 l
l Unit 1 operated at approximately 498 MWe net throughout the l
period except for a reactor trip.
On November 21, at 3:06 a.m.,
a low pressure reactor trip occurred followed by a safety injection system actuation which injected boric acid storage tank water into the reactor coolant system for 10 minutes until the pressurizer went solid and pressure was restored to normal.
An unusual event was declared at 3:31 a.m.
It was determined that one spray valve, PCV-431, had failed full open causing the l
The unusual event was terminated at 4:57 a.m. after all plant conditions had stabilized and the cause of the transient was verified.
The spray valve was repaired and the unit was placed back into service shortly after midnight on November 22, 1987.
LER 87-005 is being written to document the event.
Shortly after midnight on November 6, 1987, an unusual event was declared and deescalated when low flying helicopters passed over the plant property.
It was later learned that these helicopters were Army aircraft on a training mission.
Safety-related maintenance included the rebuilding of auxiliary feed valve AF-4020 operator, retubing the component cooling heat exchanger HX-12A, and repairing the "A" reactor trip breaker.
