Program Proposal for 3 Vent Tests at GKS$ Facility

In response to your telex of Septan 6er 6,1977, we have prepared a basic-test program of 10 tests for consideration in your future GKSS program. ,
In the enclosed proqram plan we have outlined an approach and test ob - I jectives. Table 1 'ists tests which address these objectives. The paren. i eters in Table 1 were selected on the basis of our current knowledge of j the capabilities of the test facility.: If further work on the facility "
should prove it advantageous to change some test parameters, while still meeting the same objectives, we can nrtainly accept any changes. .
We recognize that there will be an overlap between a test program proposed-Ity your own review group and the one we have sensitted. We would like an opportunity to study the inputs of your own review group members in order ;
to reconcile the enclosed program sc6pe with the rest of the program.. In -
this respect we consider the present tranmaittal preliminary.: ,
a In the matter of instrumentation, we have only indicated the categories-of measurements we consider important. The-total scope and design of the )
instrumentation of necessity is left to the program personnel. We would ' (
like to be kept infomed of design progress on instranentation.
As a further satter of interest, we would be quite in favor of performing-single vent tests in the GKSS facility with a partition in the suppression pool. This would eliminate any question with agard to test stand induced.

Introduction Referring to our earlier recommendations for full scale, multi vent

tests, the NRC is interested in performing tests witn the objectives out-lined in the proposal transmitted on May 18, 1977. The emphasis.of such j tests are on multivent steam venting to measure pressure oscillations in i
the suppression pool. The three-vent configuration considered in the pro- .!
}
posal is preferred due to the simpler vent inlet configuration. In the 9 description that follows, a basic test program is presented and the re- {
\
quired measurements are outlined. )
i Discussion I
Test Program:
For steam condensation tests a number of parameters have been identified that influence the magnitude of the pressure oscillations. These are:
- 1. Mass flux of steam
- 2. Pool temperature
- 3. Wet well overpressure i
- 4. Air concentration in the stear.i
- 5. Vent submergence
- 6. Number of vents flowing simultaneously With the proposed configuration of three vents the last parameter is held constant. The test results are to be compared with test results for a single vent performed in the same scale. Such single vent d ta has shown that there is a weak dependence on vent submergence whien does not warrant a parameter variation in a multivent test. The air concentration cannot be
varied arbitrarily ~in a : test, but. is a direct consequence of the dry well' purging taking place in the. test as is the' case in the actual plant. . Sonie small variation in air concentration will result from changes in pr' essure vessel inventory and blowdown length. As a matter of experience'in thel s later phase of the blowdown during vent chugging, essentially pure steam-is condensed which is the . desired: test ' objective .of the program., This

leaves the first three parameters to be varied in the course of the'tsst.
program. Within the scope of 10 tests a test program isishown inl Table 1 l where these parameters are varied. At the same time the nominal -test con- ,
dition are repeated twice.
Fig.1 shows the break flow for nominal' operation conditions of: the vessel (110 bar initial pressure and 2. orifices of 80 mm). Fig.!2'shows f
the dependence of specific mass flow through the three. vents as'a function of pool temperature . For the nominal operating conditions (Tests 2, 3,,
and 6) this curve is based on a CONTEMPT: code calculation. The other' , .
curves heve been approximated. .
With the nonnal vessel inventory the temperature. rise in the pool is about 25" F. In test 1 with a lower initial vessel pressure of.75 bar the temperature rise would be about 15*F. For an initial. pool temperature of 80*F. this would cause the chugging phase to occur at about 90*F.. Tests 1
3, 4, and 5 with initially higher pool temperatures results in a . chugging .
phase at successively higher pool temperatures of about 100,125 and 150 F.
The initially high mass flows in these tests are maintained. to purge the 9

initial vessel' pressure. This will' delay' the. air-purge;from the dry wellf and resul t in an increase in' air concentration in the steam at a given J L ~ l l vent mass flux. Tests 9 and 10 are included 'to ' vary the ' dry well, over: ! pressure. The pressure transient in theidry well- and. wet well for nominal conditions are shown in Fig. 3. - By varying Lthe initial! pressure. of. thef test as shown in Table 1, a variation of . dry well. overpressure of about
+ 1 bar during the chugging phase is obtained.

'l Possible alternatives to the test program are: i g- 1. The test program in Table 1.is based on 2 orifices of'80 mm. There
.l l_ may be an advantage using smallerlorifices' for all tests 'and extend ,
j the time of blowdown. This would increase the time period in.which chugging occurs. j
