SUBJECT:

STUDY OF AYAILABLE DATA ON MARK-II PRESSURE SUPPRESSION' In response to an inquiry made by NRR on March 16,1977 about MARK-II pressure suppression data RSR has' sponsored an independent study,of the

' existing data as to its applicability.'to MARK II. This_ study has been ,

performed by Professor V. E. Schreck from the University of California l and Professor C. Brennen from the California Institute of: Technology.

Their review focused on a large complex of data covering U.S. and foreign licensing and research test programs.: The' data sources reviewed are ~

identified in the report. At the same time a' preliminary cost estimate was prepared by Burns and Roe,. Inc. for the cost-requirement for a full scale multivent test facility for MARK II testing. This report will be

~

transmitted to you'under separate cover. l I We are transmitting to you six copies of the two reports on' the data sur- 1 vey. RSR plans to make this topic an agenda item on the next Containment l Code Review Meeting for a review group recosmiendation. l In summary the findings of the ' reviewers are the following:

They consider that a lack of fundamental understanding exists'in the area of steam condensation. They support further study of the avail-able data in conjunction with tests under carefully' controlled con- .i ditions and in reduced scale for better identification of the ba' sic-mechanisms. Testing in full scale is considered less meaningful in  :

that such tests would add little to the existing data base. . In. con-junction with further fundamental study, future large' scale' tests ',1f required, could be planned more effectively.

Mr. L. Rubenstein .

We are transmitting a copy of the reports to the review group consultants.

It would be much appreciated if you could distribute these reports to the NRR members of the Containment Code Review Group.
