MEETING ON NOVEMBER 24, 1987, REGARDING SILICONE RUBBER INSULATED CABLE TESTING 1 1

/

On November 24,1987,~ the staff'of the NRC Office 'of Special Projects met with representatives of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Bethesda, Maryland to discuss the results of the testing of silicone rubber insulated cables for Sequoyah Unit 2. The meeting was transcribed; Enclosures 1, 2, and 3 respectively, provide the transcription, list of attendees and the TVA presenta-tion material.

The purpose of the meeting was a presentation by TVA of the results of its -

evaluation of silicone rubber insulated cables, including tests. performed both in-situ and at Wyle laboratories.

Based on the laboratory test.results, which showed that cables with only 4 mils of insulation will withstand a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) environment, and the high potential tests performed to date, TVA concluded that the installed u cables at Sequoyah are acceptable and will perform their intended safety functions. However, TVA also stated that it has removed a significant portion of the AIW cables. These cables are being replaced with new hypalon jacketed cables.

TVA has submitted the Wyle test results by letter dated November 24, 1987. The staff is in the process of evaluating all of the test results and other informa-tion provided by TVA to develop its final position regarding silicone rubber

~1nsulated cable.
