RADI0 IODINE INTERNAL OVEREXPOSURE Temple University reported to Region I on Friday, December 5, at 4:10 p.m.
that a routine thyroid survey revealed 7 microcuries of iodine-131 in the thyroid of one individual.
Initial dose estimates range from 30 to 40 Rads l
to the thyroid, depending on time of uptake, f
j Licensee investigation indicated that the exposure was not an occupational g==
4 exposure.
There had been no work with radiciodine in the individual's lab, f
- .1 there was no contamination in the' lab and none of his co-workers were exposed.
Surveys did reveal, however, contamination in the individual's coffee cup.
Although December 5 was his last day at Temple, the exposed individual is returning in order to be available for Region I's preliminary investigation.
Media interest is not expected. The State of Pennsylvania has been and is being kept informed.
A press release is not planned.
OIE received notification of this occurrence by telephone call from the f
licensee on December 5 at 4:10 p.m.
