Subject: Inspection No. 50-29/87-15.

A special, announced, inspection was conducted at:the. Yankee Atomic ..

Environmental Laboratory on October 20, 1987. The purpose of this special1.

inspection was to evaluate your actions' relative. to two personnel dosimetry-

issues. One of the. issues involved a proposed' dose measurement method'on'a u" hot

particle" performed at the Environmental' Laboratory. The, other issue. arose in <

connection with an apparent whole body exposure in excess of the regulatory.

limits to one of the workers involved in steam generator-work on May 22,.1987.

This apparent overexposure was indicated by the reported results'of personnel-

dosimetry readings.

The apparent exposure in excess.of the regulatory limits . issue was resolved -

during the inspection. Based on our examination of'your radiological; surveys and :

dosimetry evaluation, we concluded that there was no ' overexposure in this case.'

The " hot particle" measurements, however, were found'to be at a stage of

development that was not fully acceptable by the NRC. Should you' pursue

.

resolution of the~ technical weakness in your measurements, your- re-evaluation

will be examined during a future inspection.

Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were identified.
