Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

Subject:

Plant Hatch Suppression Pool. Temperature Limit (TACs 65987/65988) j i

On August 14, 1987, Georgia Power Company requested temporary changes to the )

Technical Specifications (TS) for Hatch Units 1 and 2 to increase the Limit-ing Condition for Operation (LCO) for the suppression pool temperatures.. For each unit, the TS LCO requires plant shutdown in the event the suppression I pool temperature exceeds 95 F. At the time of the request, temperatures of the Altamaha River were so high that the suppression pool chillers were having difficulty maintaining the pool temperatures below the 95 F limit. The re-quested changes were to be effective only until September 30, 1987.

While staff review of your request was underway, river water temperatures - l cooled sufficiently that the plant was able to meet the TS LCOs without the requested relief. Accordingly, the review effort was discontinued and no further action is being taken on your request.

1 It is our understanding that an analysis is underway to support a request for a permanent change to the TS to raise the suppression pool temperature limits.  !

We will take prompt action on that request when it is received. j Please contact me if you have any questions on this matter.
