TRUCK CARRYING RADIOACTIVE WASTE LEAVES HIGHWAY IN WEST VIRGINIA At 2:15 p.m.,
the Oak Ridge National Laboratory called Region II with an incident report. A truck carrying Tri State H N 100 cask went 100 feet off the road at Route 73 N and secondary road #69 in Morgantown, West Virginia.
The truck was carrying 14, 55-gallen drums of corrosion and wear products (Mn-54, Co-60, Cs-134 and 137) in the cask.
Total e
weight of waste in cask is 4200 pounds. Radiation level vas 30 mr/hr contact when it left the site.
S Hitman Associates of Baltimore, Maryland was shipping the vaste from Oyster
(
Creek to Morehead, Kentucky. State Patrol says traffic is flowing normally at the area and there appears to be no leakage (visual appearance).
West Virginia State Radiological Team is on the way to site. Hitman is sending a supervisor to the site and should be there at 3:45 p.m.
Morgantown Civil Defense and Tri State Insurance Investors are going to the site. Accident occurred at 10:50 a.m. today.
The Department of Transportation has been informed.
Region II received notification of this occurrence at 2:15 p.m. by telephone from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
