REED COLLEGE q\\\ffy Ponland, Oregon 97202 4
' REACrOR FACRJrY July 20,1998 Marvin M. Mendonca -
Project Manager U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 L
Mr. Mendonca:
This letter is a self-report of a Technical Specification violation. ,
A weekly checklist is required by SOP 70 at Reed College's TRIGA Mark I nuclear research reactor, Docket No. 50-288. A maximum time interval of nine days is allowed between this 1 checklist. A checklist was performed on June 23,1998, and the following checklist was completed on July 3,' 1998 - a time interval of ten days. His exceeds the time allowed by SOP 70. j Subsequent weekly checklists were performed on July 8 and July 15 within the time allowed.
There are two Technical Specification requirements on the checklist that are relevant to this time interval. The primary water must be sampled weekly for conductivity, and the failsafe and alarm setpoints of the Radiation Area Monitor and the Continuous Air Monitor must be checked weekly.
Both the setpoints and conductivity were within normal limits when checked on July 3.
i He reactor was shut down during this period of time. No' adverse conditions have appeared as a result of being one day late with this checklist. Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely, I
O Ste en G. Frantz {
