'This refers'to the special safety inspection conducted by Mr.

of this office on October 20, 1987, at Limerick Gerierating Station, Unit 1,.

Limerick, Pennsylvania, of activities authorized by NRC License No. NPF-39 and

to the discussions of our findings held by Mr. S. Pu11ani with Mr. G. Edwards-

of your-staff'at the conclusion of the inspection. This also refers to a re-.

lated' enforcement conference held at our office at King of Prussia, Pennsylvania

on October 22, 1987 and attended by Mr.- S. Kowalski and other members of.your

staff.

. Areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I

' Inspection Report which is enclosed with this letter.

Within these areas, the

' inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative

records, interviews with personnel, and observations by the inspector.

-Based on the results of this inspection, it appears that one of your activities

was not conducted in full compliance-with NRC requirements, as set forth in

Section 3.2 of the enclosed Inspection Report.

This violation involves lack of

fire protection features required in accordance with 10 CFR 50, Appendix R,

Section III.G. for the control cables associated with the fire suppression

system emergency diesel generator (EDG) trip circuitry routed through conduits

located in a common se'rvice water pipe tunnel area. A fire in the area could

trip all four EDGs. Although the violation was identified and reported by you

over the Emergency Notification System (ENS) on October 5,1987 and. prompt.

. corrective actions were taken, it is being considered for appropriate enforce-

. ment action which will be the subject of separate correspondence.
