Special Nuclear Material Inventory, Ref: Docket No. 50-607
- 1. This letter amends the requested Special Nuclear Material (SNM) possession limits for the McClellan Nuclear Radiation Center (MNRC).
- 2. Authority is requested to receive, possess and use the following SNM:
- a. Fission chambers at 4.00 grams of U-235 of any enrichment
- b. Plates at 16.1 kg of 20% enriched U-235
- c. Reactor fuel at 21 kg of 20% enriched U-235
- 3. Three fission chambers are part of the facility nuclear instrumentation system and have been i at the facility since startup in 1990.
Sixteen flat plates (JANUS type) were obtained from the DOE to support the facility's boron neutron capture therapy program and will become part of the facility's permanent installation for that program.
l The 21 kg of 20% enriched TRIGA fuel accounts for the fuel in-core and in storage (both fresh and irradiated). The facility presently runs on a 24 hour2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> per day five days per week operating schedule. Therefore, there is a requirement for approximately seven fresh elements per year. In addition, the DOE policy for shipping irradiated fuel is such that the first fuel l shipments from the facility cannot take place until 2006. The 21 kg allows for flexibility to achieve operational requirements. j In addition, authority is requested to possess but not separate such SNM as may be produced by the operation of the facility. \k
