1 November 18, 1987 5211-87-2214 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn: Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (TMI-1) i Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Revision to NI-9 Repair Schedule On July 27, 1987, we reported the inoperability of NI-9, the source range neutron flux instrument located on the Remote Shutdown Panel. At that time, based on the preliminary schedule for repair, we stated that we planned to repair NI-9 during the first hot shutdown condition in excess of 48 hours5.555556e-4 days
0.0133 hours
7.936508e-5 weeks
1.8264e-5 months
.

Detailed job planning has since been completed and we have determined that an outage in excess of nine days is needed to repair NI-9.

NI-9 will be removed from the Remote Shutdown Panel during the 7R refueling outage and replaced by a new neutron flux monitoring system which will meet both the requirements of Appendix R and Reg. Guide 1.97.

This letter is to advise you that if a shutdown occurs prior to the scheduled refueling outage, we will evaluate the benefit of repairing the detector.

This evaluation will be based on the projected duration of the shutdown and radiation dose to workers, and the time until the refueling outage is scheduled to begin. The NRC will be informed of our plans.

Sincerely, H. D. H k'11 Vice President & Director, TMI-1 HDH/SM0/spb:1034A cc:
