SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF JUNE 25,1998, MEETING ON ECCS SUCTION STRAINER On June 25,1998, NRC management and staff met in Rockville, Maryland, with representatives of Cleveland Electric liliuminating Company. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the proposed testing program for the ECCS suction strainers that have recently been inctalled at the Perry and Grand Gulf faci!ities and will soon be installed at the Clinton facility.

Representatives from both the Clinton and Grand Gulf facilities were also in attendance. A list of the meeting participants is included as Enclosure 1, and a copy of the non-proprietary meeting handout is provided as Enclosure 2. The remaining meeting handouts were considered proprietary and are being withheld.

The licensee's consultant provided a detailed presentation describing the proposed testing program for the ECCS suction strainer. Bids from various test labs have been received and a final decision on which lab to use will be made shortly. Actual testing is not expected until the September - December 1998 time frame depending on which lab is chosen. The licensees will submit a final report on the test results. The staff questioned the validity of the one-third scaling of the test apparatus and indicated an interest in observing the testing.
