FAMZY NGCIIAR PLANT GNIT 1 MD 2 In our review of reports subnitted by licensees concerning malfunctions of diesel generators, we find tnat in some cases the information availacle to the contral roco operator to irxlicate the operational status of the diesel generator =ay te inerecise and could lead to misinterpretation. '

This can be caused by the sharing of a single annunciator station by alarms that indicate corditions that render a diesel generator unanle to' respond to an automatic emergency start signal anri alarms that only indicate a warning of abnormal, but not disabling, conditions. Another.'

cause can te the use of wordirs on an annunciator window that does not specifically say that a diesel generator in inoperable (i.e., unacle s at the time to respcod to an automatic emergency start signal) wnen in i fact it is inoperacle .for that purpose. .l de, therefore, request that yco review tne alarm circuitry and diecel I.

to determine how each ecodition that renders a diesel generator unable to respond to an sutomatic emergency start signal is alarmed in tne control roca. These corditions include not only the trips that lock ..,

out tne diesel generatDr start and reqJire manual reset, but also i centrol switch or made switen ;mitions that block autcmatic start,. s less of control voltage, insufficient starting air pressure of battery voltage, etc. This review should consider all aspects of possible diesel generator cgerational condit1cns, for example test conditions am! cperaticn fram local control stations. One area of particular concern is the unreset condition followirq a manual stop at the local station which terminates a diesel generster test prior to resetting the diesel generator controls for enacling succequent automatic operation.
