Dear Mr. Senator:
Re Nuclear Regulatory Commission L
Sleeping guards fined at the Florida Nuke Turkey Point Power Plant will cost the Florida Power and Light Company a 375,000 fine.
NRC announced on April 22, 1987 that seven guards were fired after they were found sleeping by a NRC inspector on January 15th.
An inspector sent down in early March also discovered an un-authorized visitor in a vital area of the plant, said Joe Gilliland, l
a NRC spokesman.
A check of the records turned up eight previous cases.
A vital area is defined as any place where tamparing with equipment could release radiation endangering the public, said Gilliland.
NRC said the fine resulted not from a single violation, but from a pattern of incidents beginning in January 1985.
Peach Bottom was shut down due to employees sleeping and playing games on the job.
From what I have read, this was done on information received in a telephone call from an employee.
Nowhere have I read of such charges against Peach Bottom over a two year period as was i
committed by the employees of the Florida Power'and Light Company.
1 Peach Bottom has a fine record for the past twenty years.
Why l
vere they closed down for the past couple of months and not just fined?
l This is causing a loss of millions of dollars.
This loss vill be passed on to the rate payers and the rate payers are helping to pay i
the NRC vages.
I think it is time for you to step in and investigate this situ-ation.
Is it a case of discrimination or a case of no fair penalty I
policy, or just another government agency gone berserk?
Your prompt attention to this matter, I am sure, vould be ap-preciated by the rate payers.
~
Very truly yours,
%-f [%.
