REQUEST FOR REACTOR TRIP BREAKER POLE SHAFT The NRC augmented inspection team which observed the initial investigation of the mechanically bound McGuire Nuclear Station reactor trip breaker, also inspected a reactor trip breaker at Catawba Nuclear Station. The Catawba breaker .had a pole shaft which had welds with indications of cracking.
Discussions with your staff reached tentative agreement;that this shaft would be made available to the NRC for independent documentation of the welds and further evaluations of causes and effects of the weld cracks. This letter is.
formally requesting your cooperation' in this matter. The specifics.of our agreement would be thet:
1). The NRC will contract with Franklin Research Institute to evaluate the pole shaft; 2). The NRC invites observation of the evaluation by your staff and that of the breaker vendor.
3). A copy of the report will be made available to you upon completion of the evaluation.
